McCLEARY — Alert residents and textbook teamwork from multiple law enforcement agencies helped nab a 21-year-old Elma man suspected of robbing a McCleary credit union Thursday.
The robbery happened at 3:44 p.m. at the Simpson Community Federal Credit Union at 424 W. Simpson Ave.
McCleary Police Chief George Crumb was the only one on duty at the time, but he happened to be near the credit union after being dispatched to a report of a suspicious vehicle on 8th Street about 10 minutes earlier, Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott said.
Police are looking into the possibility that the car was related to the robbery.
The Elma man, who was wearing black clothing, fled on foot and was last seen southbound on 7th Street. Three State Patrol troopers in the area responded to the call, along with three Sheriff’s deputies, some Drug Task Force officers, a detective, a K-9 unit and Lt. Matt Stowers of the Sheriff’s Office. Elma Police also sent an officer and two additional McCleary officers were called in.
