How walkable is your neighborhood?

Mine, not so great. Over at Walk Score, my house just off of Boulevard Road scores a 25 our of 100, and that's with a few places that don't even exist (Johnson County Park?) boosting my neighborhood's apparent score.

The site takes into consideration the number of parks, schools, grocery stores and other places you would probably drive to within walking distance of you. The more places, the better your neighborhood scores.

So, go over there, and let us know how your neighborhood score.

On a sidenote, I'm not all that surprised my neighborhood didnt' do well. Its actually one of the least community friendly neighborhoods in the city. I'm glad at least one city councilmember (recently appointed) wants to do something about that.

My scores in the near Westside

Current rental - 65
New house - 48

I'm a little sad to be moving a few blocks further from the action (Harrison), but it's still within walking distance of downtown, and totally bike-able to everything.

Near Ralph's Thrifty Way I enjoy a score of 69.

Near the Family Christian Bookstore...

... a paltry 22.

off of Cooper Point and 14th Ave. (Goldcrest). I think it's misleading though because it has the shops on Cooper Point within walking distance, which they are, but the walk without a sidewalk is a bit treacherous.

20.  If I remember

20.  If I remember correctly, we live fairly close to each other, Emmett.    I do enjoy that I live near the Pit Stop, my church, the elementary school and LBA so all is not lost.  It could be way better though!

98 Beat that suckers!

I live in the Elks Building across from Sylvester Park. This must be why my rent is so friggin' high.

I live in the Rex. Although I'm not sure I buy into this, under schools it said "Old School Pizzeria"

South Capitol 68

but this strikes me as kind of the Blue Book offical value. You know when it says your old car is worth $2, 000 or whatever not taking into account the vaule of the utliity the vehicle has to you directly.

I walk my kid to school and I walk to work every day. In fact I find myself rubbing the chalk marks off my tires that the OlyCity parking folks draw on there since I can go all week without driving and they want you to move the car every three days.

97!

I am downtown by Les Schawb and my score was a 97. Not quite as high the Elk building but still good. With gas prices going up and the environment fighting back (read flooding and heat) we need to look at where we live and how much we drive. Living in mixed use communities is the way to go.

I guess this is just another great example why we need more housing Downtown.

Near the Safeway on Capital Way. I'd personally rate it a little higher, since the site didn't mention some of the stuff that is nearby; there's a surprising mix of businesses around the Safeway, and three major buslines go past, so at worst it's a 15 minute wait if you want to catch a ride downtown. Of course, right now North Street is closed and torn up, so that would push the score way down..

I live right near the Safeway, too. Hm. I bet we could easily walk to each other's houses, and yet there's a 23-point difference in our scores.

Aren't you like a mile from the Safeway?

Don't be density-ist. Out

Don't be density-ist. Out here, that mile you're referring to is called "right near the Safeway". It's a simple suburban formula: the Safeway is "over yonder", so you have to drag out to Capitol and then mosey on over. It doesn't feel like a mile until you schlepp your groceries home. Have a little cross-zoning sensitivity, dude.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend.

I start getting uncomfortable when distances aren't measured in blocks anymore. I start sweating and hear the dueling banjos from 'Deliverance' in my head. It's scary out in the country where you live.

near intersection of Boulevard Rd and Yelm Highway someone else made the point (high tide) that distances seem to be calculated by straight lines regardless if they are walkable. Is the proximity of a service positive if I have to sprint across the freeway to get to it?
