I would like to start this next entry by offering my kind regards, to those who had the time to read my last piece. It is my understanding that some folks did not like it, and it was removed for content. I guess this took only a couple of minutes. So, I value your kind words and your ability to speed read. Clearly, in your instances, the public school system did not fail you.

I guess that I am a square peg, trying to force fit myself into a round hole, on this sight and in this town. It's funny, a lot of folks here, preach tolerance and say what we think and say counts, but I guess when you buck the trend, or latest fad, you get tossed out on your bum here on Olyblog and in Olympia. I am amazed at how in-tolerant this community is, when it comes to opposing popular thought.

I think this town stinks and it isn't getting any better. I have lived here now for 5-years, and it just seems that I keep hearing folks whine about how bad things are outside of this place, and because of that line of popular thought, we all have to suffer with public temper tantrums like last week and in November. The fact of the matter is simply this, most folks who are down to earth don't care if you are gay, straight, black, white or whatever... Folks care about how you conduct yourself, and how it impacts them in their daily life. I mean hey, if you want to make love to knot-holes in pines fences, go for it, just make sure it isn't my fence, and watch out for those splinters.

For example, let's examine this whole Bank of America deal, I am sure they provide loans to business that develop energy sources, but they also support local businesses by providing low-interest loans for those businesses to grow, develop, provide jobs and make a more meaningful and lasting contributions then fighting the police and tossing a rock through a window. Alot of those folks who apply for those loans are legal immigrants. So who lost that day? When I checked this morning, I did not hear anything about Bank of America closing shop, and moving on to greener pastures, as a result of last week's "direct action". In fact, out of spite for the little brown shirts that hit town last week, I went and opened an account at the downtown branch.

I guess what I am trying to say is that, we all crap in the same hole at the end of the day, and by focusing on the negative stuff and trying to change it the wrong way, we are not any better off then we were to begin with. The point is simply this, when we have folks like the Anarchists and Communists, from out-of-town speak for us, via stones thru windows and fighting the police, we end up on the poop end of the stick, and the folks who set the laws contract and make life more unpleasant by raising our taxes or short-change other budget items that need funds.

I think this is almost as dumb as the local Nuclear Weapons Ban passed a couple of years ago, I mean when was the last time George W. Bush rode into town with an 18-wheeler pulling an I.C.B.M on a trailer behind him? This to me, clearly demonstrates that a lot of folks have to much time on there hands, and clearly don't know how solve the issues here before us, on a local level. Cheers,

Clnwtrguy

A lot of people have claimed...

...censorship around here, but really they were just mean and didn't like it when it was pointed out to them. When you have something substantive to add to the conversation, I'm all ears. This wasn't it.

Beware the terrible simplifiers.

A lot of people have been

A lot of people have been victims of censorship (shall I list the missing posts?) around here no matter what Rick tells you.  I'm not saying it's right or wrong.  This is not a protected public space.  The curators of this site rule - no doubt.  And I accept that.  But I won't sit back and tell you everything is acceptable.  It is not.

I understand what you are

I understand what you are saying about a bit of our local culture....but our town does not stink, it may be slightly grimy and a bit intolerant...but it does not stink. In fact on most days it smells really nice, you know, the sulfur smelling tides and teriyaki joints...what more could you want. That's all I need.

I Nominate

clnwtrguy for Olympia Mayor or President of the U.S.

Thank you for not only speaking your mind but speaking the truth too!  I've throughly enjoyed your posts!

And for the record, we're not "mean" and the truth is, those who hold opinions that differ from ours attacked and harrassed and continue to call us names.  We're good people who either love our city or are tired of it being turned into a scary place to be.

Hey Ehver, wasn't Rick's post a violation of the Social Contract?  Oh, my bad, that doesn't apply to several regulars around here does it?

I thought you were done here?

We can't miss you if you won't stay away! :)

Hey, why is this post here?

Surely it should have been removed by the censors by now.

Oh for the love of.......

Not this again. I was so enjoying people not shooting at each other over perceptions of fairness. Onry et. al., if it's so bad around here then why hang out? Anyway..............

clnwtrguy, I like my town. I've lived her a long time. I've also lived in Seattle, Chicago, and Memphis and although each as it's charms, I like it here best. Olympia is funky, friendly, pretty and accessible. Olympians can take themselves a bit too seriously at times but we also know how to have fun together.

As to your perception of Olympia being intolerant, I have to disagree. On a social level I get smiled at more often than not as I walk around this town. Even the panhandlers are generally polite if not friendly.

When it comes to politics this town has a tendency to bend over backwards to be tolerant and not step on toes. In a town this size, decorum is highly valued. Too valued my opinion, but then again I began my political life in Chicago.

I'll leave this thread with the wisdom of Tom Lerher.

Life is like a sewer.

What you get out of it

depends on what you put into it
