I'm looking for info on organizations in the Olympia area that develop housing for low income and or "working poor" folks-

My idea is that nonprofit ownership of residential units could become a safety valve for folks that are economically marginalized, while at the same time renovating units around town that are neglected.

A type of real estate company, but one not based on capturing profits for investors/owners.

-any thoughts?

Homes First, and the Thurston County Housing Authority. They will have more resources for you if they're not what you're looking for.

Habitat for Humanity

South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity is building 15 homes on the Eastside (Fairview St) for "very-low-income" (30-50% AMI) community members. We would love to build downtown, if the opportunity came up. Check out other cities, Portland and Bellingham, for housing authority projects that capitalized on downtown revitalization. In Bellingham, the authority renovated a historic building in the heart of downtown for low-income folks. They are now building a 10,000 sq ft building in downtown in the next couple years (they almost didn't make it, however, because they were short about 40 parking spaces, later, the parking commission allowed it to go ahead, with the stipulation that they purchase bus passes for residents).
