Gardening for Dummies

Are there any Gardeners who could give me some tips on apartment gardening - specifically for a balcony facing East.

Mainly what I would need to know is which veggies (if any) are more likely to make it in that limited condition, and what kinda equipment would I need to invest in.

Despite learning a thing or two from my Grandparents, and despite having watched many episodes of Cisco, I'm a gardening dummy. But food prices are going up and every little bit helps.

apartment gardening

Hmm, you could google around on "apartment gardening", also check through library catalog on that and on container gardening.

Nearly all vegetable plants will grow better in full sunlight than in shade. However, leafy crops such as lettuce, cabbage, greens, spinach and parsley can tolerate more shade than root crops such as radishes, beets, turnips and onions. The root vegetables can stand more shade than those which bear fruit, such as cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant.

I found the above here.

I've done lettuce, greens, and spinach in shady conditions.

Local kitchen garden folks might have some ideas too.

Are you eligible for a free garden from them?

I have a library book called Garden Your City

That is specifically about gardening in small spaces. Merwyn, if there isn't another copy available and you're interested, PM me and I can either get it to you or return it to the library so that you can check it out. I'm done with it, but have been lazy about returning it.

I'm told some students (about 25 or so) at TESC

are conducting some kind of action at Art Constantino's office at Sem I. Something about SDS's status at Evergreen. Campus police told other folks to leave the building.

Was SDS banned?

Know anything about their status?

They held an event while the concert moratorium was underway on campus. They worked with the admins to get the event to move forward, but then they just got impatient and went ahead with the event anyway using campus resources.

They are trying to make it seem like the admins just up and banned them, but they knew the consequences of failing to work with 'the man' to get the event to go forward. Now they are mad because 'the man' is apparently stopping free speech?

Free speech is this case = student activities fee money.

They have a 6 month suspension for using college resources without authorization or something. I don't really know. Pretty much nobody cares on campus because most people get that 'free speech' wasn't really threatened.

Actually...

...the moratorium was an unconstitutional ban on free speech. Freedom first. Charges second. That's the "american" way. I have no clue as to why they couldn't hold another event after dead prez. The WHOLE problem with the dead prez concert was that campus police WERE NOT PRESENT UNTIL A PROBLEM ARISED. That's bad policing on TESC's part and to ban concerts from there after as a result of lack of police presence at a prior event is unfair to students. Not to mention, TESC receives a HUGE amount of money in grants so there is no excuse for not having real police present in addition to a poorly trained security group.

That's not true. Several

That's not true. Several events happened after the moratorium. The moratorium simply required groups to meet several times with various departments and admins on campus to ensure the event was adquately staffed, safety precautions were in place and that every one was on the same page. SDS's event got about half way through that process and then they said 'screw it' and held the event when they were told not to because they neglected to follow the temporary procedure (which several other groups on campus successfully followed).

SDS was suspended and their funds were frozen. Now they are throwing a tantrum because they can't get their money from 'the man.'

The 'free speech' ban is pretty lame. Last time I checked TESC still has anti-abortion rallys on red square, lots of crazy wacko speakers, etc... SDS is just mad because they lost their money, because they can't do anything to fight the man if the man won't give them their money.

But I am Just Another Voice

Actually, the SDS seems to

Actually, the SDS seems to have found a way to fight the man without any funds. I hear there is a sit-in going on in one of the administration buildings up at TESC.

The WHOLE problem with the dead prez concert was that campus police WERE NOT PRESENT UNTIL A PROBLEM ARISED.

Yet if the police really were in full force from the beginning I'll bet dollars to donuts you'd be bitching about the Police State.

I think they lost their official student organization status

but I'm not exactly sure.

Blah blah blah SDS blah blah blah

SDS had an event planned months in advance. They had flown in speakers and performers and the whole nine. The campus Admin gave less than clear instructions on how to proceed and then, after the event happened decided that it had violated new rules. It wasn't exactly like SDS flew in the face of a direct order or something.

Good for them trying to get their status back. I don't know where this whole free speech thing is coming from though. Thats as embarrassing to read as a "higherarchcical tranny"

Re: garden info

"The Square Foot Garden" (try Orca or Amazon)

...great starter and good for small sites! =)

Square foot garden

I'd like to second that motion, great book! Teaches folks to plant according to what they can actually use, rather than overplant initially and end up not being able to maintain it.
