I am burnt out on about every downtown lunch spot...

I almost considered going to Le Voyeur.. except that I don't get a four hour lunch break to wait for a piece of hard burnt garlic.

Anything fresh and exciting out there?

How fresh? How exciting?

The newest place I can think of is Aqua Via. But that's WEEKS old. Personally, I am still excited about the Bread Peddler. But I have a long attention span when it comes to pastry.  Why don't you list the places you go, and why you are sick of them? That would make interesting reading. Then I'll recommend any place you forget to list.

Aqua Via..

I have dined twice, and had them cater for about 15 people once...

In all i have to say the most memorable item is definitely the open-faced lamb sandwich.. but its like waiting for the punch line .. when the 1cm pickle and three potato chips are presented on the rectangular mile-long ceramic plate.

Long wait times and menu items priced as if to be expensed for power-lunch meetings on the company account.. makes Aqua Via a losing strategy for an impromptu lunch decision.

I had finally decided to just go buy lunch ingredients at the grocer when I realized I had completely forgotten about Bread Peddler. I felt sad because I LOVE eating at the Bread Peddler!

Isn't the Bread Peddler GREAT?

The food is SO wonderful! The sandwiches, the pastry, the soups that dare to contain meat. I don't really like the atmosphere, especially if you have to go through that corporate lobby to get to the bathroom. Wouldn't it be great if they moved it to a better location?

I see your point about Aqua Via, but don't you nevertheless feel that eating there is very entertaining? I like to go there when I barely want to eat. Like, if I'm trying to diet but I don't want anyone to know. You can consume 400 calories for dinner there, and yet spend as much as you would for a real meal!

Where? Huh?

Are those places in Olympia?

But you misunderstood me... it's when I don't want anyone to know I'm dieting. To be spared those insufferable conversations about how I don't need to diet, I look great, more to love, it's all a patriarchal conspiracy, have another brownie, blah blah blah.

Peace became pizza. -- Guglielmo

»

Must be rough ;)

And because of that I won't chime in
»

Well, it is!

You know, sometimes your waistband gets a little tight, the obvious solution is to eat less for a while but everyone is, like, on this nonstop campaign to undermine your resolve, and, like, you know, talk about pizza all the time! It sucks. It's much easier to be surreptitious about the whole thing and eat at Aqua Via as often as possible.

For the record, in my opinion you don't need to lose anything. Now that we've gotten past that, I would love to be able to diet, but I just don't have the willpower. I try and workout harder, but even that's been slipping lately. Pizza is a huge weakness of mine.

The key is to find an exercise regimen you enjoy...

... like yoga! And then afterwards, dine at Aqua Via.

RETRACTION

So, I walked by Aqua Via today, and looked snoopily in the window, expecting to see a bunch of skinny people dining on cornichon slivers... But instead, I saw a couple of -- how shall I put this? -- people who could most likely survive a few months of famine, chowing down on generously portioned salads. Hearty salads of substance. So, I guess I was wrong. My apologies to Aqua Via! I will be back when my waistbands loosen up!

Peace became pizza. -- Guglielmo

»

AMEN!

This whole I'm right & you're wrong banter is old and weary.

I get to head home today from the hospital for a much needed break and to attend my 4 year old grandson's final adoption hearing tomorrow.  There will be a party at DSHS afterwards!  He was chosen to represent Thurston County for National Adoption Day tomorrow!

I do know...

And I think it is insane, forcing someone to do something they don't want to do. People have the right to choose what they want to sell, for whatever reason, and I respect that. If they had the only pharmacy in town, I would say they had an obligation to provide further services, but they aren't so they don't.

I just wish we could all please respect Stormans' Right to Choose. I don't demand K-Mart carry handgun ammo, I go somewhere else and buy it. If they can live without my business, I can live without theirs. Simple as that. You don't like what Ralph's isn't selling respect that Right to Choose and go somewhere else.

But I like Bayview more. They have a better deli than Ralph's.

»

Isn't there anywhere in town where they turn over the cheese...

... faster? Back when I shopped at Ralph's, I bought some really expensive Reggiano parmagiano there once, and it turned out to be moldy -- and not in a good way. Usually I wouldn't bother, but that chunk of cheese cost like $14, so I took it back to exchange it. But they had this large bin of Reggiano cheese, and they were ALL moldy. That's one really bad thing about living in a small city; no cheese shops.

Peace became pizza. -- Guglielmo

»

Oh wow

The last time I was at Ralph's.......wow it's been awhile.....I was having a rough time suppressing my gagging as I walked by this barrel of cheese. I seriously thought someone had puked somewhere nearby until someone saw my facial expressions and pointed to the barrel. That people would eat that amazes me, I mean, if it smells that bad going in......
»

My MIL

Makes a to die for Parmesan Chicken out of that expensive parmesan!  It is killer stuff!  But she only uses the expensive stuff when she makes it for family!  LOL!

You'd think with all the wineries and wine shops around here there'd be a good place to get a variety of cheeses!

But when I sit down with a great glass of Reisling, I like some portwine cheese out of a little plastic tub smeared on a wheat thin so who am I to say I'd be a cheese connoisseur!

home from the hospital!  You can make it with that plastic container stuff but it's just not the same as the real stuff!  And you fry it in a little bit of good olive oil and then place a small salad on top of it and drizzle a little lemon vinegrette over it all!  MMM!  I wish I had a plate of that instead of hospital food right now!

My Theory..

Is that the small Thriftway Empire.. capitalizes on the fact that there are no specialty stores in Olympia.

It is my belief that since the downtown Safeway has been squashed.. that not only does the Thriftway ilk get to work on the customer base that is in the mind of "Work Downtown, live downtown.." Thriftway has miles better selections than Safeway did/does.. and more realistic choices than the Co-Op for alot of things...

But man! They can get pricey! And they are more than happy to extort their customers, regardless of the whole stupid "faith while shopping" issue.

I love the people who work at and started/maintain the Co-op .. but the stores have a sort of late 80's kind of filthy run-down feeling. They do. They can be more than a little gross. I'm not saying that it is the specific fault of anyone in charge or working there.. but there's a little Olympia effect when shopping at ANY Co-op in washington --> outside of Thurston.

The effect is an overall "Whoa! It is nice and big and clean and full of choices!!!!"

While I love some items for sale at the Co-ops.. I would rather walk the three blocks to Thriftway from where I live and pay more for more selection and less hippies.

I know that this is most likely a very unpopular opinion.. but until someone steps to the plate .. and makes a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods pop up.. I will continue to keep buying crap to feed my face.. at the easiest compromise.

I don't care about Plan-B or Storman's stupid stance on morality.. or even the smug 'Family' disposition of the employees. That stuff is water off the ducks back. The asshole employees aren't feeding me anyways.. my paycheck and personal choices are.

That's my Thriftway/Not-Thriftway argument.

You should check out Top Foods on the west side, I've always been happy with their deli selections.

good Gorgonzola

What gorgonzola do you like? We can get it for you at the Eastside Co-op. The one available there now is very affordable but not the most delicious, it's true.
»

Back to cheese, Janet, in general, I've found

that cheeses at the Eastside Coop actually go moldy the slowest of the 4 places I've shopped. And they are far less expensive than Ralph's, but why would anyone be walking into that den of sinners anyway?

BTW NONE of you have more instance to cry about your waistbands than me right now...I haven't even seen my feet for several weeks now.

»

What I really love is gorgonzola dolce

Gorgonzola dolce is the young, soft, sweet gorgonzola. I don't know exactly who makes the ones I've enjoyed so much in the past -- usually they've been cut from a block. And they've been imported. I have a feeling that they are likely very perishable, and there's probably not a huge demand around here. But it is SO GOOD! Thanks for being so responsive, Michelle! I will look at the Co-op for gorgonzola, and give it a try. That's where I've been getting Reggiano lately, and it's really amazing!

Peace became pizza. -- Guglielmo

My friend EG :)

Some things to remember:

  • this place is really jumping lately, we are really busy
  • we are volunteers doing the very best we can
  • OlyBlog is the place for current local info, we all are valuable, including you
  • you might see a docent name on the list and wonder why an issue isn't being taken care of right then, realize that the docent might be in msg with someone sorting things out, they could be reformatting a post, uploading something, on the phone with a user, doing behind the scenes work.....you catch my drift :)
  • I know things get frustrating. But we can handle it, we will survive, all of us, we really are all in this together. And if things get just too much, you know, if some of us just can't stand something here, the web is huge with lots of room, we can always set up other personal and community blogs

power "sats"

OK, so sats mean satellite...

I saw this blurb on Google News a while back that was about solar power beamed to receiving antennas on Earth, and now I am having a hard time tracking it down--

The US DoD was on-board saying that the DoD wants to enable this technology (or some such similar spooky talk).

Seems that our sun, Sol, spits out alot of power, and that if the power gets intercepted above the atmosphere, it can be harvested (if it is beamed to Earth on a different frequency, around 58-66GHz).

There is so much solar power that the amount avail each year far surpasses all collective terrestrial sources-

So, the real questions are:

Will the draft be reinstated in the US?

AND

Do you support the idea of power sats?

Really yummy. But no gorgonzola. I believe they sometimes have a firm domestic blue cheese.

So many conversations on this thread, we should start separate threads for each to save the confusion. Let's see, that's: Eggs Benedict, cheese, downtown eateries, Janet's weight, the eating habits of bovines, whatever chad360 was talking about, am I missing anything?

I'll be on the hunt this weekend for the annual bird.  Two questions:

1.  Frozen or non-frozen?

2.  Baked or deep fried?

What are are you planning?
