Taking down a section of "Sylvester's Window":

Yesterday morning I spent a couple of hours helping pack away parts of the reference desk, the genealogy and Northwest collections to help prepare for the renovation of the building over the next month or so.

You can't really see it in this crappy video I took, but the staff signed the circulation desk that is being removed.

The boxing the books process was, to put it mildly, exacting. Each box was numbered, and each collection was taken from beginning to end, left to right (at least I hope it was left to right) and boxed in order.

Here's a stack:

Here's a bottom box that didn't make it:

Is it true the boxed books

Is it true the boxed books won't be available for checkout until after the remodel? Or was it just reference books that were boxed?
»

mostly reference

Someone from the library can correct me, but my understanding is that only the stacks directly on the walls and near the units that are being replaced are being boxed. So, mostly reference, but some of the circulating books will be boxed. Although, if my memory serves, they tried to move some of the circulating collection out to other libraries so there wouldn't be a shortage of books system wide.

Do you think i could help

Do you think i could help next time to work off a fine that was given back in 1993?

what was boxed...

Basically the only things that weren't boxed were the adult fiction and adult nonfiction books. I don't believe we will be pulling from those collections either even though they weren't boxed. Those shelves will be covered in plastic while they install the carpet and paint around the shelves. We shipped everything we could out to other branches before we started this process, so there should be very few items that aren't available elsewhere during the remodel. Most of our shelves have to be pulled up for recarpeting, but my boss struck a bargain with the contractors so that we could just move books up on the adult fiction and nonfiction shelves and carpet around those shelves, which saved us a lot of time. Emmett and the rest of the Friends of the Olympia Library were a huge help to us this week. Thanks, Emmett, both for the help and for the report! PS- staff AND patrons wrote all over the circulation desk. It was awesome.

Librarians?

I heard some of the librarians were placed in cryogenic stasis chambers for the duration of the construction. True?

old technology

They were sent to the future via a rift in the time space continuum politely provided by city staff.
