A great segment of Bill Mahr last night.

People have accused him of being prejudiced in reference to his comments about the Catholic Church and the issues of sexual indiscetions.

Mahr:  "I didn't PRE-JUDGE, I JUDGED.

We often forget the root of words.  There is a difference between judgement and prejudice.  We'd all be for the better if we learn and practice the difference.

What does editing this post have to do with rule 4?

Rule 4. Write each entry as if it could not be changed; add to, but do not rewrite or delete, any entry.

This post is a matter of opinion. JT believes Mahr is a bad person. It is not a fact, but an opinion held by JT. And me for that matter. Scumbag is not a curse word. A docent called an outside party an A**hole and his post was not edited. Why was this edited? C.

By the way someone took down an entry yesterday which breaks the social contract.

I was wrong.

You aen't making many friends this morning.

You might want to go back to bed, catch a little sleep and start the day over again.

Nah,

have to expect it from this audience.

I don't think folks have a

I don't think folks have a problem with Mr. Maher having a judgement opinion. I think the rub comes with how he said it and who he compared the Holy Father too. People are awful quick with the "Nazi" thing these days. It kind of insults the memory of the people who defeated them and denegates the victims of there tyranny.

Bill got in trouble moslty

because he called the Holy Father a Nazi. Bill was a good guy and apologized for that comment. But yes, it would be nice if people could distinguish between a reasoned judgement and a purely biased opinion....though it can be difficult to do sometimes. There aren't many people I know who can claim to be reasonable or unbiased when it comes to Catholicsm and it's church. Perhaps I am just hyper-sensative to America's legacy of anti-catholicism.

Still, that should not prevent us from continuing to acknowledge the suffering caused by the priests and ennabled by the bishops of the church and that continues to be minimized by organizations such as the Catholic League.

Bill also said...

If the Pope were the head of a worldwide corporation with pedophilia coverup problems, he'd be in jail.

THAT was what he got the most heat for, according to last nights show.

»

The Boy Scouts?

...Nope, the Holy Father probably would not go to jail under Bill's scenario. More likely it would be the bishops who actually transfered and protected the criminals. I don't know how much the Vatican knew about the scandal when it was occuring and I doubt Bill does either. Knowing what we know now, the Vatican's kid-glove treatment of people like Cardinal Law is reprehensible, but certainly not criminal.

Considering that 'scumbag" is a reference to a used condom, I'd say that his pretty rough language.

Isn't there something about treating others as you wish to be treated?

»

If I acted like Mahr, I would expect to be called at least

a scumbag. He is a loser, but stepped to new lows with his comments about the Pope. I did misspeak though when I used the term scumbag for Mahr. That term was much too kind.

Take your text...

Pull out Bill's name, insert Dick Cheney and instead of the Pope, the conversation as about his lack of empathy for the dead American soldiers.

Is scumbag the proper term?

»

Er...uh...

you sound worse than him actually. I read what you write about Islam. Heck, you're not even trying to be funny. You referred to the Qur'an as that "damn thing" or "damn book." Pretty low if you ask me. Say "hi" to Bill for me.

I think I saw this.

This is when he was comparing the Texas Morman Pedophiles with The Church?

I thought it was really right on. The Nazi reference was so inconsequential and so far removed from the excellent POINT Mahar was making, that I still can't recall him using that word, not saying he didn't, just that I don't remember it..

"Texas Mormon Pedophiles"

Talk about a triple wammy. But it's probably more accurate to call them "Texas Morman Ephebophiles."

The comparison with the church is somewhat apt, but also somewat strained. We know that bishops in the Catholic Church protected priests who molested children by just moving them to differnet parishes. That was criminal (and I don't understand why authorities have not acted on it), but the church does not encourage adult-child sexual relationships or consider them a sacrament as it appears they do in that fundamentalist Mormon sect.

Maher, however, mistakes his unflattering characature of the church for reality and goes a bit overboard in my opinion. Not to mention, he also just makes things up, like the Nazi accusation and the letter to the bishops (anyone have a copy?)

Here's the clip.  It's at the end.

IIRC

The Pope was in the Hitler Youth?  At any rate how in the heck is this a hyperlocal conversation?

I appreciate the distinctions that Larry is making about words

It's one of my pet peeves that folks says you should not discriminate.  We all discriminate, it's a choosing, analyzing process.

Discrimination based on prejudice throws out all the analyzing process and relies on stereotypes instead of doing the work of understanding the facts and challenge of a particular situation and judging, choosing, discriminating upon the facts.
