Finally. We can actually start talking presidential politics. Soon, the headcases will be gone. Thompson, Guiliani, Kucinich (sorry, RobW), and the other cellar dwellers will start falling off. I agree we need choices in politics but if their support is so minute that it doesn't matter, jump. This is the realist in me talking. Check your news source of preference for results but Obama and Huckabee win in Iowa. Obama's lead can be overcome in NH but I don't think Hillary will do well there. I believe Edwards has a much better chance. With 91% reporting Edwards leads Clinton by 9 votes for second place. The way Wolfson's been talking the past few weeks Hillary should have won it outright. I think she's done. Had she placed 2nd with a nice margin, maybe, just maybe, she'd win over NH voters. Will she make it to Nevada and South Carolina? I believe Obama rolls on from here if he keeps it clean and focused. Huckabee's winning out over Romney by a 9% margin with 34% of the vote and Thompson picked up a respectable, but all too late, 14% of the vote. 67% of Republican precincts have reported. Guiliani got spanked! Disclaimer: Iowa is largely a Republican state - I'll reserve final judgement after NH. UPDATE: With 96% reporting Edwards has a 11 vote lead and McCain has moved from 4th to 3rd but both he and Thompson are at 13%.

I'd call Iowa "quasi-republican".
Submitted by The Original Yoda on Thu, 01/03/2008 - 7:16pm.I grew up in Des Moines (In the Dagoba system) - but that's my opinion. Congrats to Obama.
Can Obama go all the way? Is he the European candidate (from Tshida's Blog)?
Huckabee? I seriously doubt he could make it all the way.
...then I remember that we elected George W. Bush one time...
Vice President (acting President)
Submitted by Ehver Green on Thu, 01/03/2008 - 7:30pm.There's my dig on GW. I like the guy (I'd have a beer with him - or a line (not anymore though)) but hate his politics. Looky there, a nested parathesis!
I do believe Obama can go all the way but we haven't seen the Republican opposition all that much. We've had a lot of intra-crat banter but very little smearing from the Republicans, but it is coming, no doubt.
Huckabee is pretty clean for the most part. Most of his follies have been in the past year. At least the memorable ones.
I believe it will come down to the VP choices.
saw a bumper sticker that said Cheney & Satan 2008

Submitted by Rob Richards on Thu, 01/03/2008 - 7:33pm.To see Edwards, the populist, beat out Clinton, the neo-liberal, is great.
Huckabee could never beat a Democrat so I hope he keeps doing well.
John Edwards
Submitted by Ehver Green on Thu, 01/03/2008 - 7:48pm.Is smart. He's my Democratic frontrunner right now with Obama a distant second. Hillary doesn't register on my voting radar. Huckabee was my choice on the Republican side long before this. Edwards was a senator when I lived in Charlotte (1998-2001) and from what I could tell was a productive member of the senate. If it weren't for his trial lawyer background... He has his flaw as they all do but I can identify with him.
Not a quote because I don't remember it exactly but Edwards, as a populist, said something to the effect of, "Do you want corporate America stealing from the futures of your children and grandchildren?" I understand the superficial nature of a comment like this but it does resonate with me.
Don't say never! =) I don't make it a habit to vote Democrat but I will if the candidate is right.
Agree on Edwards!!
Submitted by Mike on Thu, 01/03/2008 - 10:29pm.Feel a little bad for Hillary if only because I think she really takes a beating and a lot of irrational hatred from the religious right - uppity women are really not following the dictates of the old testament.
But don't count out Huck, remember he's a another good old boy from Hope, Arkansas. We could save on Presidential libraries, just have his stuff in the right wing and Bill's stuff in the left wing.
Huckabee was a shoe in
Submitted by Anonymously Larry on Thu, 01/03/2008 - 7:34pm.Heartland Republicans are going to follow an Evangelical. I'm somewhat amazed at Obama, but maybe his message is more important than his face. If so, I'm glad. It would be nice to know that we can elect a president without worrying about color, sex or choice of religion (other than Protestant).
I'll be interested to see how the Huck does in a more secular setting like New England. There is no way I would vote Republican, but I'll say he seems to be a nice man - EXCEPT - the strking similar looks to Richard Nixon.
nice?

Submitted by Phil Owen on Sat, 01/05/2008 - 1:27pm.The Dems have quite the history in that state. Wasn't Iowa a key swing state in both the last elections? And weren't there some serious irregularities favoring the Repubs?
I think the Iowa Dems are pissed, and they're going to show it by showing up at the ballot boxes.
The Canaanite's Call
You're thinking of Ohio in the last election.

Yes, on Edwards too
