» "The Department of Homeland Security's National Exercise Program (NEP), the nation's overarching homeland security exercise program, will conduct a combined exercise in May 2008 that will test hurricane preparedness planning, assess federal interagency Continuity of Operations (COOP) procedures, exercise a response to terrorist attacks in Washington State and test Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA). These linked exercises are referred to as National Level Exercise 2-08 (NLE 2-08)." It's not about a huricane in Washington State

Wonder what kind of WMD
Submitted by security_six on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 1:48pm.They are thinking for Washington? :-)
So how well could folks here hold out with supply lines badly disrupted?
Life's a reach, then you jibe.Probably just as "well" as folks anywhere in America

Submitted by Guglielmo on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 2:13pm.Three days is not enough
Submitted by security_six on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 2:17pm.Three days is based on the assumption that government services will be working. Seven days is a better choice, and 30 is best if you have the willingness to take your survival seriously. Rotate supplies and make sure you can leave your house with several days worth of food for each member as well.
As far as the next siege of Stalingrad.... I have the WWII Soviet Rifle already, but nowhere near enough ammo :-)
Life's a reach, then you jibe.Well, S6
Submitted by Guglielmo on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 2:23pm.many times we aim for sufficiency, not perfection. Three days is more than enough for most emergencies...not all, but most.
Better is the enemy of done.
True
Submitted by security_six on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 2:33pm.I just consider if the government thinks three days is good, I need more. After all they handled Katrina so well...
Life's a reach, then you jibe.agreed
Submitted by enpen on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 2:53pm.To be fair, that was under the watch of the Bush administration, though. Aside from being remarkably proficient at making old friends and business associates even more enormously wealthy, I haven't seen this administration handle much well...

Earthquake Drill
Submitted by Marcie on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 10:20pm.All state agencies participated in an earthquake drill just last week. I have heard that different agencies looked differently upon the seriousness of the drill. We evacuated our building, but I heard that Dept. of Ecology didn't evacuate theirs (? - just heard it, wasn't there to confirm). I also learned that my "emergency whistle" is a piece of crap and takes more lung power to blow than if I just yelled out to someone if I was trapped. I also learned that many Capital Campus workers go to Wagners for coffee during these drills :)
But do I feel prepared in the event of another earthquake because of these drills? No way, the reality of the last quake was something you can never truly prepare for. However, we do have extra water at our house and a designated meeting spot if we can't get home. Also, tons of canned food on hand just in case.
a lesson from my parents
Submitted by enpen on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 10:31pm.This is more for future Marcie than present: The parent with the kid stays put and the other parent goes to them.

I happened to be a Response
Submitted by Merwyn Haskett on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 10:45pm.In Head Start's area there was an Emergency Exit door. Right after the shaking stopped - and I was trying to get everyone in my area to walk calmly outside - someone actually asked if it was okay to use the Emergency Exit.
If I was in a different mood I would have told her it's only for emergencies.
I did better than another Response Captain - she immediately ran for her car and got the Hell out of there without sweeping her area and insuring people got out safely. (That's the exact wording used in the Committee's Response Report later that month)
Just in time for May Day!
