YouKnowWho needs to lower his salt intake. I'm making a vegetable soup with a base that has little to no salt. Does anyone have suggestions to spices that would enhance the flavor?

I am so sad right now

Submitted by OperaGirl on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 7:05pm.I only use kosher salt. It's not as pungently salty as table salt. I really like it. I don't use a lot of salt at all and sometimes when we go eat out we are overpowered by the amount of salt that is used in a dish! Your food doesn't have to be bland...try the kosher salt and just use a couple of pinches. We are also fond of lots of garlic and also my new best friend, onion powder, since the kids won't touch an actual onion with a ten foot pole!

If I had some salt sustitute product I would name it salternative.
MSG makes things taste more flavorful by increasing the surface area of the tougue.
I wouldn't recommend that though. How about seaweed or seaweed powder?
Might wanna check with your doctor on that, though.

When cooking, most anything that will make a salt-free soup taste good is going to be sodium rich itself. Real bummer. Hopefully you'll find a good salt alternative, though!

Basil, thyme, bay leaves, garlic, hot pepper sauce and black pepper. A dash of cloves.
It gives a robust enough flavor that you won't miss the salt.
