For Desecration of the American Way of Life.

A rat is a contractor that does not pay all of its employees the Area Standard Wages, including either providing or making payments for family health care and pension benefits. Businesses that choose this breed of contractor are guilty as well. When contractors underpay their workers, often the rest of pick up the difference when we pay our taxes.

Shame on GVA/Kidder Mathews for contributing to the erosion of Area Standards for area carpenter craft workers. The Pacific NW Regional Council of Carpenters has a labor dispute with Davis Schueller Inc. performing work in the Vance Building in Seattle. Davis Schueller Inc. does not meet area labor standards, including providing or fully paying for family health care and pension for all of its carpenter craft employees.

The Pacific NW Regional Council of Carpenters objects to substandard wage employers like Davis Schueller Inc. working in the community. In our opinion the community ends up paying the tab for employee health care; and low wages tend to lower general community standards, thereby encouraging crime and other social ills.

The Pacific NW Regional Council of Carpenters believes that GVA/Kidder Mathews has an obligation to the community to see that area labor standards are met for construction work performed on their projects. They should not be allowed to insulate themselves behind "independent" contractors.

Please call Mike Grainger at GVA/Kidder Matthews 206.398.2277 and tell him that you want them to do all they can to change this situation and see that Area Standards are met for their construction projects.

Local Connection:

This information was passed on to me through a friend who walked past an informational picket in front of the offices of one of the guilty parties on Capitol Way in downtown Olympia. Updates will come as I get them.
