January 9, 2008 For the past two months, including the New Year's Eve holiday, the Evergreen State College has been the victim of copper wire thefts. The thefts involve underground wiring that connects to light poles on the Evergreen Parkway in front of the campus.
A possible suspect vehicle is described as a green Ford Ranger with two male suspects. Evidence left behind suggests the suspects have some expertise in the field of electrical work.
February 6, 2008 Local law enforcement agencies have received numerous reports of wire theft from new construction and municipal conduits in all areas of Thurston County. The suspects have removed underground wire which supplies power to street lights, metal covers from underground vaults, and wiring from inside the walls of new construction. The thieves then sell the copper wire to metal recycle yards.

The above is from the Crime Stopper of Olympia/Thurston County site. Check out the KOMO story also.

Copper wire theft may sound like no big deal, but it is. Often times we tax payers will be picking up the tab for replacement. This is also definitely a safety issue. Traffic signals and other devices are disabled. Entire stretches of road go dark.

Thieves are risking the lives of drivers and construction workers, as the damage may not be noticed until the traffic light goes dark or someone unknowingly contacts a live circuit. (Source WSDOT)

The Washington State Department of Transportation has lots of information available on this, including an online report form and a report number 1-877-976-WIRE.

Some thieves try to dress the part of workers with hard hats and all, so it can be easy to assume that all is well. Please report anything suspicious to the relevant authorities.

The Olympian was right about this

and that's hard for me to admit. http://www.theolympian.com/editorials/story/328746.html It's difficult to believe that people were digging up wire and no one saw it. Thank you for this post.

We can spread the word

I think many of us usually wouldn't be suspicious of people who appear to be legit workers, some guys have even worn hard hats and uniform looking stuff. And in some cases the people seem to have advanced electrical knowledge.

I keep imagining our infrastructure being unraveled from beneath and around us. Costs us a lot of $ and is potentially dangerous.

The Olympian has done a good job with this and I wanted to help spread the word further, an important freeway onramp light, one I'm often on, got stripped recently and it really brought the issue home. WSOT has tons of cases already to deal with.

More wire theft

March 5, 2008 Between February 22nd and February 25th, a burglary occurred in Lacey at a construction storage container in the 4000 block of Marvin Road NE. The suspects were able to break open the lock and then stole nearly $24,000 worth of building materials, including copper wire, electrical equipment, and cables.
Olympia/Thurston County Crime Stoppers pays up to $1,000 cash for information leading to the arrest and charges being filed of this or any other crime. Callers never have to give their name. Collect calls are accepted. Call 493-2222. Over $150,000 in rewards have been paid to date.

Copper wire theft

The City of Olympia is experiencing an increasing amount of copper wire theft. Copper wire has been stolen from street lights, signals, and storage yards. These thefts jeopardize public safety by disabling traffic signals, roadway lighting, information signs, and other transportation systems.
