I don't typically think of Oly as being full of bike thieves, but the listings on Craigslist say otherwise. What's going on?

And the kicker is this one:

  • 1983 Trek 501 road bike. Thief pushed the rider in the bushes, grabbed the bike and took off. Stolen in West Oly on Cooper Point Rd. just off the road across from Capitol HS field. Crazy!

What is going on?!?!

my bike wheel was just stolen..

I had my bike parked at work and overnight (I work overnight shifts) somebody stole the front wheel. The thing is, this is a piece of sh*t old ten speed and I'm sure you can just grab one of these wheels for free from a used bike shop around town. So, what I thought immediately was, even THIS piece of bike property gets stolen around here. FTW. The police could care less about this problem, despite how badly it disrupts people's lives, especially those who need bikes to get to and from work. Bike thieves learn that this crime pays because it's so unlikely they get caught. Here my idea on how you catch these f**ks, if the police don't do it maybe someone else can: A sting operation with nice or even not-so nice bikes, locked, with substandard locks, all around town. Have them all GPS tagged somehow. When they get stolen, track them down to where they've been taken to (several or many bikes will probably end up at the same location), find the people who stole them and.. well, use your imagination. But don't be too kind to them. If the police really cared, they would conduct these sting operations often enough to deter all bike thieves. That is not the case though is it now?

My bike was stolen on Sunday

My bike was stolen on Sunday night as well. I live by Roosevelt Elementary and it was taken from my front porch. The bike was U-locked, frame to wheel and the front tire was blown. They took it round the corner and dumped it.

I don't typically think of Oly as being full of bike thieves...

And yet, you should. Because it is. I too have been relieved of my bicycle, twice, in this fair city (in the last 3 years). It's rather notorious for being this way, according to all the bike culture kids I know... but I've been too heavy to comfortably ride for a while, and I don't mind walking that much. Neither bike was mine for more than a week of actual use.

Investigating Craig's List Ads

People whose stolen bikes appear on Craigslist certainly have a one-up on the investigation into who's responsible!

wow. ive had quite the

wow. ive had quite the opposite experience. after one fateful friday night i "lost" my keys. on sunday afternoon i returned to my bike, which was locked downtown. after my pal clipped my bike lock, i realized that my house/bike lock keys were dangling from my gear shifter, and they had been for nearly two days. i told a guy about this just yesterday and he said "wow. that says a lot about the human spirit." i mean, it also says a lot about me but regardless !!! my bike didn't get stolen although it very well could've.

I hope

I was surprised when I read those Craigslist posts. I think your experience as being more typical Olympia. In Southern California, if you left your bike unlocked for a few minutes, it was already gone. However, maybe things are changing here.
