Spend some time with an array of beautiful handmade and altered books. Meet local book artists and participate in a discussion of their creative process. Handmade and altered books will also be on display for the entire month of June in the library's front lobby.

The Olympia Timberland Library is having a small scale book arts show in the front lobby display case for the month of June, and we would love to put your handmade or altered books on display. This is a great opportunity for artists who are interested in displaying their work locally in a casual venue.

Join three authors for a reading and signing of their new releases. Elizabeth Crane, winner of the Chicago Public Library's 21st Century Award, will read from "You Must Be This Happy to Enter: Stories." Nina Revoyr, winner of an American Library Association Stonewall Honor Book in Literature award, will read from "The Age of Dreaming: A Novel." Abraham Rodriguez, American Book Award winner, will read from "South by South Bronx." The books will be available for purchase. The publisher of the books is independent book publisher, Akashic Books.

Discover the enjoyment of combining captions, titles, or journal entries with images. You’ll survey the digital options of online photoblogs, scrapbooks and slide shows, and practice captioning and titling images from cameras, online, old albums, etc. Please register at the library or by calling (360) 352-0595 beginning March 25.

Join author Silja J.A.Talvi who will be discussing her book "Women Behind Bars: The Crisis of Women in U.S. Prisons." Born in Finland, Talvi is currently an investigative journalist, essayist, and senior editor for "In These Times" magazine. She lives in Seattle. A book signing will follow the talk. Orca Books will sell copies at the event.

Join Dr. Ratna Roy, a professor from The Evergreen State College, for a lecture on African American Literature. Dr. Roy will adress the theme of the “marginal” character in African American fiction from its early beginnings to the Harlem Renaissance. The talk will explore the portrayal of this character who was neither black nor white, yet both.
