I don't know about you, but I can't think of one single thing I can buy in Lacey that I can't buy somewhere else.

Not that it will, in the scheme of things, make any difference, but why don't those of us who support Camp Quixote and care about homeless people take a look at doing our shopping in those places that understand that a regional, even state approach is needed to providing social services, including a safe place to spend the night if your home is a tent.

Do we lose anything by doing this? Maybe some of our smaller, struggling, independently owned businesses have something to gain here.

Also, I would encourage you all to talk with the Lacey Council Members about why they have concerns when Olympia and Tumwater passed their ordinances unanimously and when tent cities have been moving around Seattle for years. To my knowledge, the Lacey Council has not visited any of the sites where the camp has been in the last year. Does anyone think such a visit might change their minds?

Urgh.

I shop local whenever I can, and by local I mean Olympia located and owned first, then Thurston County owned/located and stretch my reach from there.  Although as my needs dicate I may go elsewhere.  I don't own a single product from Olympic Arms for instance.  They don't fit my desires/needs.  But I shop at locally owned grocery stores or farmer's markets whenever I can...

At any rate the notion of boycotting Lacey business (many of which are big chains, but there are plenty of small local business as well) in order to force an issue on the city council is odd.  On one hand you are voting with your wallet, you spend your money elsewhere because Lacey will not provide a service you feel it should.  OTOH you may be punishing small business because they just happen to be located in Lacey.  I don't think the large big box stores give a dang one way or another, but a boycott could negatively impact small Lacey business...  I would just ask you consider that before calling for a Lacey boycott.

Then...

the small business owners in Lacey should put pressure on the government to pass the ordinance.

How about asking nicely first?

You are starting to sound like me in a bad mood.  :-)  "Hey Lacey small business'.  No offence but we think Lacey needs to adopt this ordinance and if they don't we are going to boycott your town and your business just because you are in Lacey, so put pressure on the council will you?"  I'm not sure you will win many friends that way...

People have been asking, and the council hasn't listened.

This isn't the first time the city of Lacey has heard about this. They've been avoiding it for a year now. Sooner or later, if they're not careful, someone's just going to bring them a tent city whether they like or not. It's happened before, I'm sure it could happen again.

What If

those small business owners agree with not passing the ordinance?  Should they still be forced out of business by those who want the ordinance because their opinions are different?

First,

the boycott isn't my idea, and not really my style of organizing, so I'm probably not the one to be asking about it.

As far as your hypothetical, are you asking whether it's "right" to boycott them for having different opinions? If so, I would say that if you find someone's opinion marginalizing in some way to some group of people, and you take exception to that, then it's quite American of you to boycott them. Vote with your dollar!!

Buying local is always a mixed thing...

First of all I hate buying overpriced second rate crap.

Secondly.. its hard in Olympia to find a decent thing like a kitchen store.. without going to the mall (although I did buy a killer spatula at Einmalens).

Thirdly.. I have no intention of dumping any kind of money to support local businesses that are mostly antique stores and badly run customer service jokes (thinking about you 'Dimension').

A boycott would be cool if the things that I need to support my lifestyle existed downtown. To date, few do.

How about a "Downtown Business Training Course" instead? If a new owner wants to set up shop.. make sure they aren't foaming at the mouth insane.. and trying to get started in 2008 with a 486 in the back and no credit card support. It also helps to have a storefront that doesn't look like hillbilly alabama inside, and smell like cats.

Mike.. ends rant....

Your rant is heard...

Mike, It's true that alot of people have been complaining in the last few month about the selection of stores in downtown and believe me - we're listening.

If I would have a little more cash, okay alot more cash, I would open a few more stores!!

Look at downtown Olympia, as a child you need to love into the right direction.

We're getting there, have patience with us, hit us over the head where we need it. But we will come around, are listening and will improve the state of things significantly in the near future.

PS: a kitchen store you say.... hmmm, what a great idea...

translating above

Weeeirdness. The above may seem like spam, but here is it translated:

"Downtown Olympia would not be destroyed by new warehouses."

Very honestly, I think that the problem of local entrepreneurs in the city center Olympia somewhat inflated. Olympia has strannny center of the city but also to benefit from approaching other stores. There must be a conflict between warehouses, which are not homogenous and warehouses, which are more typical, but it would have met the needs of the people. Downtown Olympia today quite useless.

Strannny?

I wonder how typing in Russian serves a purpose? I'm confused.

I think that made more sense untranslated.

Although I'll have to keep an eye out for the strannies.

Yes! Boycott! ...Wait a second...

When was the last time I bought anything in Lacey anyway?

If I had a dime for every time I heard someone suggest a boycott...
