WASHINGTON—The U.S. government ruled Tuesday that meat and milk from cloned animals and their offspring is as safe as other food, but pressed firms that produce clones to hold off on bringing them into the food supply.

"Extensive evaluation of the available data has not identified any subtle hazards that might indicate food consumption risks in healthy clones of cattle, swine or goats," the Food and Drug Administration said in a final risk assessment that confirmed preliminary findings from 2006.

I don't get what the big

I don't get what the big deal is. Perhaps the cloned stuff would be a lesser quality but I don't see how it could be dangerous.

Regular red meat already increases the risk of colon cancer, is cloned meat really any worse?

My biggest problem with cloning

is the loss of genetic diversity that makes most life forms so robust. Other then that, I cannot see why it would be dangerous food.
»

have you heard about how bad genetically modified organisms are?

With the introduction of GMO's the rate of food allergies increased dramatically. Watch "The Future of Food".

A cloned animal is not genetically modified

so I don't think that applies.

exactly

I agree with you totally.

Eating cloned animals may be safe...

...but it is still icky.

Serious question (I

Serious question (I disclaimed because it could be mistaken as a smart-ass response.)

Did you say it's icky because all meat is icky (I don't know if you're a vegan or not) or because cloned and/or genetically-modified food is icky?

It's the cloning thing.

Eeewww!

Meat: Regular or Local?

Merwyn said "Regular red meat already increases the risk of colon cancer..." Well if that "regular red meat" is corn fed it does. Also it ain't good for the cow as they evolved to eat grass. Or the land that grows the corn as it's more than likely sprayed with chemicals of one sort or another. So when ya consume corn fed red meat that you get in the supermarket remember that it isn't really regular. It's just that we've been fed this stuff so long we think it's regular. As for clones, it's the monoculture, stupid. About 70% of all the antibiotics used in this country go into animals raised to be eaten. The only way they can survive the horrible conditions of industrial production is to be drugged in this way. And this is just while we are dependent on a handful of species. Imagine what it will be like when we are depending on a handful of genetic copies? Scary. That said, I like eating meat. I asked on here a while back about a source for local organic chickens and got squat. I've sourced my beef and pork locally for a few years now and would love to find some local birds. Heck I'd like to try my hand at slaughter too so I can have a real, visceral connection to the cycle of death into life.

McClones

"Billions and Billions copied"  I see nothing wrong per se with eating cloned food.  I don't think critters should be cloned though.
