Do views of the Capitol Campus belong to the public? Is it appropriate for views of the Capitol Campus of State Government to be privatized? Can a denial of the proposed rezone be understood as acting in the public interest? - I think you know where I stand. - bert

This is an upclose view of the previous shot. A proposal to rezone the "isthmus" area of downtown Olympia to allow for a mid rise (65 to 90 feet) building (currently proposed as a luxury condominium) would block this (and the previous) view. Granted, even a shorter building would block the view. That's why it's a better idea to make a park instead.

Capitol Campus from 4th Avenue. It is likely that this view will be destroyed in the event that a proposal to build a luxury condominium is realized. Do views of the State Capitol Campus belong to the public? Can private interests supercede?

Here it is closer in. This view might be destroyed if buildings are erected in this location.

Well,

Give all those trees along the street and in front of the capitol 100 or so more years and they will be the culprits. I'm serious. Last time I said this I got chastised as not being a very good OlyBlogger, but apparently nobody wants to talk about the street trees that will block views in about 100 years.

And actually, Bert, most of the views from your pictures will actually be preserved based on the corridor conceptual design by TriWay.

Many of the views are already blocked by the 1 story businesses when you're walking along 4th by BayView anyway.

But I am Just Another Voice

Well, I realize that you're just another voice, but

...I'll respond because I think everyone deserves to be heard and listened to.

My position on the trees v. condo argument is very simple. I would much rather have my view blocked by trees than by condominiums - luxury condominiums at that.

As far as the views being blocked by existing businesses / agencies, my response is simply that the best use for that area would be as a public park - a central park - a novel feature that would attract residents, visitors, and investors to the downtown core.

As to whether or not you're a good OlyBlogger? That's for you to decide.
