I just noticed this morning that the Westside Blue Heron Bakery is closed. How long ago did that happen? I'm talking about the one on Harrison that's connected to the Shell gas station.

Couple of weekends ago...

...kinda sad.

I hear the Blue Heron is or has acquired a mill and will soon start trying to mill their own flour.

I wonder if you can get a sandwich at the Mud Bay Blue Heron?

westside location closed

I think that if the location had been different, say near Vic's, that this Blue-Heron-Bakery outpost very well might have been successful.

I seem to recollect that it closed two or three weeks ago.

I love Blue Heron

and I recognize that they are in it for their delicous baked goods and not just for the money. I have asked several coffee shops to carry Blue Heron and almost invariably they said they had in the past and doing business with them was ridiculous. Late or no deliveries, wrong orders, poor billing practices. I started going to the closer-in westside location as soon as it opened and more than once I'd show up at 10 am and there would be nothing to buy. The delivery hadn't shown up yet. Which is sad for me becuase some days I just NEED AN APPLE TURNOVER (their whole wheat turnovers are amazing!) I look forward to the market opening and being able to get my fix while picking up my veggies. I also hope they can decide if the way they are running their business is working for them because I'd love to see them more places around town.

BHB Westside

The bakery has been hit with a near tripling in flour costs. Fifty pounds was $18 a bag now goes for 36 and soon will be 48! This summer it may get to 60 to 80 a bag!!!! That coupled with ever rising gas prices was making consolidation necessary. As to late deliveries Kathrine, well let me say, being seven days a week is easier said than done, late bakers, deliverers, van problems, oven malfunctions, many things happen and we apologize for not getting your apple turnover to you. The cost of our high quality products also makes it difficult for some shops to carry our product and still maintain the margins they expect to make on baked goods. We deliver daily still to Cafe' Vita, East and West Coops and on Monday and Friday to the Filling Station. Yes, we will be at the Market starting the first Thursday in April. After more than thirty years of service to our community, we will continue on.

Love your stuff!

Don't you have some vegan things, too? My daughter went vegan in January, and we're desperately looking for stuff she can eat, and nothing at the Bread Peddler fills the bill.

This was posted in a CSA

This was posted in a CSA thread...not sure if you saw it but thought I'd bring it to your attention just in case...vegan goodies! :)

8 Arms Bakery

There are also vegan baked goods by Mondo Vegan or some such sold at the west side coop...probably the east side, too.

Awesome!

Thanks, Chia. We should talk more about this some time... It is very challenging to be the mother of a vegan. She's so pale and skinny!
»

You should see me! That

You should see me! That would put your mind at ease in regards to skininess caused by vegan diet! :D

Sorry To Hear This Evan

I know your daughter T helped you a lot and as soon as she headed off to college so far away I wondered if you'd be able to find quality help.  Look forward to trying one of those apple turnovers soon!  Our family has always loved your products and we know how much love and dedication you put into the bakery!  Their loss (those retailers who say the things above) and as employees, they have no idea how hard it is to run a business and what all needs to go into it to keep it going!

Take care, give T our love and look forward to seeing you at The Farmer's Market soon!

XO!

The perfect seed triad

I remember when the BHB made this incredible three seed bread - not like the three seed they have now. While the current incarnation certainly is delicious and makes some fabulous toast, it is only a fraction of the recipe it once was. See, now the Three Seed Bread has the seeds on the inside. The Three Seed Bread I speak of had a fabulously crusty, amazingly crunchy, perfect blend of three seeds magically stuck to the outside of the bread.  Gather round, bread lovers and I'll tell you a story about days gone by....

Once upon a time, the price of raw goods was such that a baker didn't have to cry over spilt poppy seeds.  This was the case in the era of the Three Seed Bread (with the seeds on the outside).  While some purists may shudder to think of a single poppy or fennel seed wasted, those with the taste, dare I say, the yearning for a loaf of bread with a seedy crust accepted the sacrafice of a few good seeds.

Those days are behind us now, comrades.  The cost of doing business is such that those sacrafices are no longer acceptable.  And so we bid farewell to that icon of organic bread, the royalty of all things yeast (or sourdough), the Three Seed Bread with the seeds on the outside.  You are missed and until such time as we meet again, I will pleasure myself with the Walnut Olive Sourdough. Adieu, old friend

how can we shut up the merchants

Blue Heron used to be a collectively owned business. Can the Owner please stop adding the years where this was intended to the years of ego-gratifying merchant-speak? Can we stop the merchants from tooting their own horns on this site? Any business that does not create living wage jobs is not doing this community any service. Working for the state in this town IS working for McDonalds. Lets Create an alternative.

I don't understand...

...what you're saying here. Could you spell it out a little?

I don't like your attitude, bub...

...you have no idea...

where has "the owner" of the BHB ever touted his own business here on OlyBlog? Never!

Your comment about working for the State? Je ne comprend pas.

»

it's ok

baby-with-the-bathwater has only been a member for 23 hours. He/she obviously only became a member to vent their thoughts on the owner of the BHB and make some unrelated relationship between working for the state and working for McD's. Your comments make no sense. Besides that, I just plain find them offensive.

The question here is not how can we shut up merchants, BWTB, but how can we shut up your negativity??
