Hola OlyBlog posse-

Weird haps this morn with my residential Internet service:

So, I was checking out that vid that JT posted and tried to watch it 3 times all the way through on OlyBlog, and the the vid stopped about half-way thru and then >poof< my DSL modem's Internet light went out each time-

-I was curious is anybody had the same fail or insight~

I imagine that Qwest is to blame, but I can't figure out why/how...

The modem would reset and the DSL light comes on (means the modem is connected to the CO), and the Internet light would go green, and then fail when the vid reached mid-stream...

...now the weirdness increases...

I went to YouTube direct and watched the same vid and no prob at all-

Curious huh?

So, I'm gonna drop the Voice service on my Qwest line and either stick with Qwest as my ISP ($10/mo.) or go back to Zhonka and pay for the sexy Zhonka DNS service of whatever magic it is that Zhonka does...

...heck, I might just switch to Zhonka to support a local business (again)!

OR...

This may finally be time to get do the homework and setup the next phase of the ENA FreeNet project:

Acquire Internet access wholesale through NoaNet and start the wireless ISP in my neighborhood that I have been planning for a while-

I really just want a phat pipe to the 'net-

-so, for the Web connoisseurs out there, what is the Internet connection of choice?:

*Optic (DS-1)

*Copper (T-1/Frac T1)

*Wireless (802.11/802.16)

--I won't consider Comcast, as they restrict the end users (no sharing)--

You might talk to Speakeasy

Their contract explicitly allows/encourages sharing. I'm signed up with them because of that (though they aren't cheap), and keep thinking about doing a neighborhood network on my block, but I haven't got to it yet... We did buy a few Meraki mesh network boxes and flash them with the open source upgrade, but that's as far as we've got so far. Too many other projects, and a lot of trees on our block, too.

As far as your options go, can you actually get anything but copper in Olympia?

Best,
Thad

Internet in Olympia

Thanks for the info Thad,

My last "call around" resulted in NoaNet and TSS Digital services both developing quotes for broadband via a wireless bridge (TSS from downtown, and NoaNet from a NOC in Tumwater), and SpeakEasy has been a WiFi sharing pioneer for many years...they even had a sales plan at one time for such a service-

-TSS also has private-label optic. How much bandwidth are you looking at from SpeakEasy? (Bandwidth Advisors is a good resource).

I think I'm gonna move away from Meraki and go with WiFi peers meshed, that way we can "do" PC-2-PC directly without crossing traffic on the Web gateway...does the OS you flash'd on the Meraki(s) allow for direct connection? I was thinking about the CuWIN OS

I'd like to work towards a nice wireless AP on the Fir Steet Water tower, and am actually gearing up for a huge mesh build-out here in the ENA (finally found a partner to help me install APs!).
