The thing that bothers me the most about the Capitalarians inviting the USS Olympia and two Canadian naval vessels to town is that they don't seem to get, even after 2004, that there are a lot of people that simply don't like it. Probably more folks that don't than do.

What if they had invited the USNS Mercy instead? The Mercy is a huge hospital ship that recently returned from a deployment in Southeast Asia. It would be a nice split the differnce solution that would recognize those serving in the military while also recognizing the concerns of those not so excited at inviting warships.

Plus, it looks rad.

Mercy

What a great idea!

While in the name of

While in the name of diversity I don't have the biggest problem in the world with the ships coming to town (and with this being the 50th Lakefair it's a shoutout to what was in Budd Bay back in the 50s) the Capitalistarians should have indeed invited a ship such as the Mercy as well.

I have to believe there's a

I have to believe there's a little bit of retribution in the invite (which secretly, well not any longer secret, I love).  It's not unprecedented to have a military ship in Olympia during Lakefair but the last was the USS Olympia in 2002.  I'm sure everyone here is familiar with the 2004 council decision (4-3) to not allow the USS Olympia back in our port.

Why does it have to be a split the difference solution?  Should we always look for a split the difference solution?  I don't think so.  I'm looking forward to visiting these ships (USS Olympia won't be here but the CO and Sailor of the Year will be).  I think the U.S. vessel is the USS Ingraham.  Not sure how you arrive at more are against the visit than are for it, but wait until you see the lines to ask, "Permission to come aboard."

Seafair has the Blue Angels, the Thunderbirds perform at McChord (open to the public).  You never hear people asking to compromise these squadron's events.  No KC-130's in their place.  What fun would that be anyway!

I do hope the protest community is civil and not criminal.  I hope they are respectful of the human beings that will leave the ship for our downtown.  I hope they one day discover the real meaning of the diversity they love so much, but can't bring themselves to practice.

the council didn't forbid the USS Olympia

The council didn't vote not to allow the USS Olympia, it has no power to do something like that. They decided to send a letter not inviting the sub.

I actually have a USS Olympia tshirt from 2002, but the reason I thought splitting the difference was important is that Lakefair is a big enough event that it should at least try to embrace all comers, not thumb its nose at a pretty big minority.

What's the difference - they were SnUBBED either way.

I'll be in line

I've never toured a ship in my life. A battleship just seems awesome. No offense to the first aid ship above, but I'm sure you'll hear more boys asking Dad to take them on the gunship rather than the medic ship.

I'll go with you if you'd

I'll go with you if you'd like a more detailed tour.  My 8 year old son will be with me as well.

Did you serve on one?

I have to coordinate with that and my friends wedding, but if I bump into you that would be great.

Not a frigate, but yes.  I

Not a frigate, but yes.  I spent 4 years on the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) out of Philadelphia and Jacksonville, FL.  Much of the internals are the same from ship to ship - most of the variations are above deck.

Perfect! :-)

and another take...

I do hope the military community is civil and not criminal. I hope they are respectful of the human beings that live in the places they visit. I hope they one day discover the real meaning of the freedom they love so much, but can't bring themselves to practice.

an excellent suggestion

For what it's worth, Emmett, I think your suggestion is spot on. As Norm pointed out, there will probably be a lot more young boys wanting to check out big guns than a floating trauma unit. Of course, I'm not entirely sure we should just blindly follow the whims of little boys...

I can't for the life of me remember where, but I heard a parental aphorism recently that goes something like this: we don't have to teach our kids to hit, they do that naturally; we have to teach them not to. Having spent a lot of time at playgrounds over the last year (being a parent sounds perverse), this statement's truth value is rapidly increasing for me. Inviting a ship like the USNS Mercy would be an excellent teaching opportunity.

Which is the mightier nation: that which can afford to send its military abroad, or that which can afford to send its medicine?

There is a time to hit

I won't go any further into it than that.

So if we become a mighty nation of medicine, and sink the military, or downsize to only a "defense fleet" what would we do when a nation needs military help?

Everyone needs to respect each other

Pro-peace people need to act peaceful.

I hope that the pro-war people don't act like the person that I saw get in the face of one of the Women in Black and start screaming.

I hope it is peaceful

I think the only thing that would upset me was a group of people blocking my way, trying to prevent folks from taking a tour. Of course a few firecrackers can clear a path REAL fast ;)

Ugh - yet again.Security

Ugh - yet again.

Security issue may prevent ships’ visit

Unless the TCSO steps up and handles the security detail, it doesn't look like we'll even see the ships.  Once again, the council chambers are packed with TJ's friends and once again, they prevail in dictating every twist and turn this city takes when it comes to the military.

Gotta love TJ

On militarism

Pulling out to see the forest, this is all starting to resemble an archetype. There exist people for whom a military presence is desired, those whose apathy creates unknowns and those who grow uncomfortable with armed occupation.

A military presence feels like an act of force against some residents. Keeping the military out feels like an act of force against some residents. And the ideologies are joined in struggle.

Really this entire thing is an argument over symbols and their social relevance. If as many locals as those who see no/negative value in military symbols ceased to recognize the meaning of a red light, the struggle would manifest itself in car accidents and unenforceable laws. In our current case, however, the wrecks are mostly psychological and the existing schisms are widened. Unfortunately, as the archetypal vehicle is one of militarism, even attempts to oppose it with non-violence are likely to be met with force. Birds of a feather, and all...

I think you guys give TJ all

I think you guys give TJ all the power that you say he has. TJ isn't a powerful person, he's a city council member who is usually in the minority on issues. If you stopped blaming him for everything, he'd get no press.

The facts are pretty clear from my mind: The city didn't budget to provide extra security for Lakefair, thus don't have the money. They also apparantly were very clear with the Lakefair committee that Oly was on a fixed income regarding the fair, the organizers went ahead and invited three military ships. I don't think that makes it Olympia's fault, especially not TJ's fault. Of course people showed up to bitch about warships, that's the m.o. for a lot of people in this town, but they had nothing to do with stopping the ships from coming, and saying they did is giving them credit they don't deserve.

»

he'd get no press

He will always get press because he's loud about his support on issues.  Think Tacoma Port protests.  He wasn't on official city business and still ended up in the press.  His affiliations will make him press worthy - especially in a town where the local paper takes great joy in the division of ideology.

»

Yes, and

there's no reason for us to fuel it by constantly making him out to be some lefty godfather controlling minions of progressives.

Seriously, I agree with you, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." Or the press in this case, it still doesn't make what is written true, neither does it make TJ responsible for everything lefties do in this town.

»

He may not be responsible

He may not be responsible for the lefty's but you know he is the damn poster-child of the local anti-war goons. "City councilman gets shoved by a cop down at the port!" "He was only trying to protect a little old couple."

The guy loves it. I'm not saying he's all that powerful but reading his anti-war rhetoric in the paper or looking at the back of his laptop when I'm at a council meeting, ugh. He thinks he's way cool and loves the spotlight.

»

um, correction Norm

He may be the poster child for the "Peace Movement", but not for the anti-war movement, and yes, there is a difference.

And goons is not a very nice word!

»

"peace movement" vs

"peace movement" vs "anti-war"....ok Rob, and "goons" is a great word, and you know it! =)
»

clarification

The peace movement wants peace, meaning non-violence, throughout the world. I think violence can be justified, such as an overthrow in Darfur in order to stop the genocide. Therefore, I and like minded people are anti-war, but not pacifist. That line of thinking doesn't jibe with the peacniks. That's the difference, it's pretty big.
