Badlands

'Badlands', director Terence Malick's second film, is plain and simple, excellent cinema. To put it in terms modern movie goers will understand, he told the story in one movie that Tarantino did in two. Those being 'True Romance' and 'Natural Born Killers'. Tarantino actually pays homage to 'Badlands' with the score of 'True Romance' as well as Patricia Arquette's southern drawl narration that was a near replica of Sissy Spacek's from 'Badlands'.
'Badlands' the story of Kit, a James Dean look-alike 'bad boy' and Holly, a daddy's (Warren Oates) little girl looking to rebel. Don't want to give away too much plot, but the pair set off on a cross country crime and killing spree, well, Kit does, with Holly more or less along for the ride (a contrast to 'Natural Born Killers', where Juliette Lewis takes part in the killing).
I want to clear one thing up also: This is not a violent movie. It does have some shoot outs, but they're not gory at all. This movie isn't about the violence, it's about two beautiful characters who go on an adventure. One of those rare movie occasions where you are left wanting more, a bit perhaps because I felt the characters could have been opened up and dumped out a bit more, but Malick did a wonderful job of helping us get to know these two not quite in love lovers.
I highly recommend you rent and watch this movie, you can get it at Rainy Day Records and Video on the corner of 5th and Franklin.

She and I have tons of DVDs we haven't even tackled yet. Someday I'll get around to watching The Killer Shrews starring Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltraine of Hazzard County himself, James Best.
Last movie I saw in the theater was No Country for Old Men at OFS, which shows how much I'm using my membership. I missed There will be Blood and Juno because I wasn't paying attention.
An awesome movie we saw about a month ago is Once where an Irish busker and a Czech musician collaborate on creating a demo tape. That's the one where the actress/musician was invited to come back on stage and give her acceptance speech after the Academy Awards Orchestra booted her off.

I am Legend, and Beowulf
Submitted by Norm on Tue, 04/22/2008 - 5:36pm.I actually liked them both.
I am Legend was SO very different from the book, but a decent story regardless. I gave it 4 stars on netflix.
Beowulf was pretty good, but the story didn't seem very deep. Plus, I'm not against gore, but even as an animated flick, it was a bit much. 3 stars
No Country For Old Men
Submitted by JstPlnOnry on Tue, 04/22/2008 - 9:41pm.0 stars - How this movie because the Oscar film of the year I'll never know. I'd give you a synopsis but it was so all over the place nobody that watched it with us understood and thing about it and the ending was the worst ending in movie history.
American Haunting - 4 stars - Based on the true story of the The Bell Witch about a family in the 1800's who's father steals land from a supposed witch who curses him. What ensues is some type of entity wreaks havoc on the family. The ending of this movie is not what happened in the original story which makes this "based on a true story" but the events that happen throughout the movie are allegedly what actually happened to the family.
We Own The Night - 4 stars - Great good guy vs. bad guy movie about a father & 1 of 2 sons (Robert Duval & Mark Wahlberg) who are on the police force. The remaining son is a partying drug addict. When the city cracks down on the Russian mob for drug importing, the partying brother is caught in the middle of his lifestyle and his family. This movie kept us on the edge of our seats! Great action & lines! It reminded me a lot of S6 and I PM'ed him & told him! One line in particular that reminded me of him was when the cop brother gave the partying brother a gun for protection and told him, "It's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6".

I'm finding out that No
Submitted by Merwyn Haskett on Wed, 04/23/2008 - 8:22am.It was faithful to the book - Tommy Lee Jones captured his character exactly as I pictured him when I read it. The Coens captured Cormac's vision of 1980 East Texas and showed why they're superb filmmakers - their best since Miller's Crossing (with Fargo being a category of its own)
Besides, I've been a huge Kelly MacDonald fan ever since Trainspotting.
It's alright that this wasn't your cup of tea Onry - I hated Titanic.
3..I'll name 3
Submitted by enpen on Tue, 04/22/2008 - 9:47pm.Metropolis - I really like silent films and this one not only blatantly plays with archetypes it created them.
No Country For Old Men - I loved it. Had I the time I'd watch it again and again and again.
21 - It was fun. It was also the first date my partner and I have had for awhile, so I watched it with rose colored glasses.
