Badlands

1973
Martin Sheen
Sissy Spacek
Warren Oates

'Badlands', director Terence Malick's second film, is plain and simple, excellent cinema. To put it in terms modern movie goers will understand, he told the story in one movie that Tarantino did in two. Those being 'True Romance' and 'Natural Born Killers'. Tarantino actually pays homage to 'Badlands' with the score of 'True Romance' as well as Patricia Arquette's southern drawl narration that was a near replica of Sissy Spacek's from 'Badlands'.

'Badlands' the story of Kit, a James Dean look-alike 'bad boy' and Holly, a daddy's (Warren Oates) little girl looking to rebel. Don't want to give away too much plot, but the pair set off on a cross country crime and killing spree, well, Kit does, with Holly more or less along for the ride (a contrast to 'Natural Born Killers', where Juliette Lewis takes part in the killing).

I want to clear one thing up also: This is not a violent movie. It does have some shoot outs, but they're not gory at all. This movie isn't about the violence, it's about two beautiful characters who go on an adventure. One of those rare movie occasions where you are left wanting more, a bit perhaps because I felt the characters could have been opened up and dumped out a bit more, but Malick did a wonderful job of helping us get to know these two not quite in love lovers.

I highly recommend you rent and watch this movie, you can get it at Rainy Day Records and Video on the corner of 5th and Franklin.

When her father punishes her

When her father punishes her for seeing a boy by shooting her dog I didn't have much sympathy for his fate. I wonder if viewers being desensitized was part of Malick's intent.

We try to say "phaged up" here.

My personal favorite, besides such standards as "We're on a Mission from God" and "No, I am your Father" is "Made it Ma! Top of the World!"

Convoy: considered one of

Convoy: considered one of Peckinpah's worst efforts but it's also his biggest opening weekend moneymaker. Plus, it's got Kris Kristopherson and Uncle Paulie from the Rocky movies so what's there to complain about?

Jungle Book: Tammy got a boatload of DVDs for her b'day and this is the first one we've seen of that batch. She and I have tons of DVDs we haven't even tackled yet. Someday I'll get around to watching The Killer Shrews starring Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltraine of Hazzard County himself, James Best.

Last movie I saw in the theater was No Country for Old Men at OFS, which shows how much I'm using my membership. I missed There will be Blood and Juno because I wasn't paying attention.

An awesome movie we saw about a month ago is Once where an Irish busker and a Czech musician collaborate on creating a demo tape. That's the one where the actress/musician was invited to come back on stage and give her acceptance speech after the Academy Awards Orchestra booted her off.

Full Frontal Nudity

I saw "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" last night and was a little surprised at all the male nudity. Some of the humor was a little too raunchy for my taste, but the satirical parts were very funny: the snippets from fictional television shows, and the rock star who steals the protagonist's girlfriend were hysterical. Sarah Marshall's new boyfriend was like a cross between Sanjaya and Mick Jagger, a nightmare version of a romantic rival.

Local Hero

One of my all-time favorites is this quiet 1983 comedy by Scottish film maker Bill Forsyth (Gregory's Girl and Comfort and Joy). The film begins in Houston, but is set primarily in the small village of Ferness on the Scotland coast. “Mac” MacIntyre, a young oil executive played by a charmingly understated Peter Riegers (Animal House and Crossing Delancey) is sent to Ferness by his boss Felix Happer (Burt Lancaster) to negotiate a deal to purchase the village for the site of a future oil refinery. Happer chooses Mac because of his Scottish connections, though Mac later admits his Hungarian grandfather changed his name to MacIntyre because he thought it was American. MacIntyre, admittedly “more of a telex guy” reluctantly accepts the task. Teamed with his local polyglot Scottish connection, Danny, Mac finds his way to Ferness (acquiring an injured rabbit along the foggy way). Mac, who falls in love with the little village, and the villagers, who are more than willing to sell out, provide most of the comedic tension for the film. In addition to being funny, the movie, beautifully filmed and scored by Mark Knopfler, is a treat for the other senses as well. Perhaps I'll add it to my backyard cinema play list for this summer.

I am Legend, and Beowulf

I actually liked them both.

I am Legend was SO very different from the book, but a decent story regardless. I gave it 4 stars on netflix.

Beowulf was pretty good, but the story didn't seem very deep. Plus, I'm not against gore, but even as an animated flick, it was a bit much. 3 stars

No Country For Old Men

0 stars - How this movie because the Oscar film of the year I'll never know.  I'd give you a synopsis but it was so all over the place nobody that watched it with us understood and thing about it and the ending was the worst ending in movie history.

American Haunting - 4 stars - Based on the true story of the The Bell Witch about a family in the 1800's who's father steals land from a supposed witch who curses him.  What ensues is some type of entity wreaks havoc on the family.  The ending of this movie is not what happened in the original story which makes this "based on a true story" but the events that happen throughout the movie are allegedly what actually happened to the family.

We Own The Night - 4 stars - Great good guy vs. bad guy movie about a father & 1 of 2 sons (Robert Duval & Mark Wahlberg) who are on the police force.  The remaining son is a partying drug addict.  When the city cracks down on the Russian mob for drug importing, the partying brother is caught in the middle of his lifestyle and his family.  This movie kept us on the edge of our seats!  Great action & lines!  It reminded me a lot of S6 and I PM'ed him & told him!  One line in particular that reminded me of him was when the cop brother gave the partying brother a gun for protection and told him, "It's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6".

I'm finding out that No

I'm finding out that No Country is polarizing the movie-going public the same way that Pulp Fiction did. Either it's the greatest movie ever made or an unbelievable waste of time.

It was faithful to the book - Tommy Lee Jones captured his character exactly as I pictured him when I read it. The Coens captured Cormac's vision of 1980 East Texas and showed why they're superb filmmakers - their best since Miller's Crossing (with Fargo being a category of its own)

Besides, I've been a huge Kelly MacDonald fan ever since Trainspotting.

It's alright that this wasn't your cup of tea Onry - I hated Titanic.

3..I'll name 3

Metropolis - I really like silent films and this one not only blatantly plays with archetypes it created them.

No Country For Old Men - I loved it. Had I the time I'd watch it again and again and again.

21 - It was fun. It was also the first date my partner and I have had for awhile, so I watched it with rose colored glasses.

Hmmm, polar reviews from you and JPO

I really have to watch it now. What's with the bad guys haircut though? Seriously.

No Country For Old Men

Immediately jumped into my all time top ten. I've watched it seven or eight times now. Just flawless film making by the Coens. Characters sooo well developed even the bag guy (who may have been the baddest villain in movie history) could be sympathized with. People who know movies, love this movie. The only film better put together this year was The Darjeeling Limited, but No Country was an all around better movie in my book. I could go on until my fingers bleed about this movie.
