I noticed an ad for Olympia (Olympia - Lacey - Tumwater tourist and convention bureau) in the back of a Sunset magazine so I'm checking out the site listed: www.visitolympia.com

Click on the What's New section that appears after the intro and then choose 2. Prelude to the Promenade. The text is about Westfield Capital Mall but the photo is of Olympia Farmers Market.

CLM Design Group created the site, they are based in Reno, Nevada. I don't know if they also keep it updated.

Maybe it is not that big of a deal, the mix up of photo and text. But I think it is important for visitors to know: Westfield Capital Mall is not the Olympia Farmers Market.

Mall Schmall

So what's the big deal? I can see how they could confuse the two. One has organic vegetables, the other has Victoria's Secret. Details, details.

What concerns me more is the complete lack of information about caimans. No problem, really, except the weather is warming and those REPTILIAN MACHINES OF DEATH will once again be in force in the Fetid Lake of Doom, a.k.a Capitol Lake.

Far be it

Far be it from me to even dare suggest that the site in question is run by the you know whats.

Although, you know, there is the slim possibility that no caimans actually exist in The Fetid Lake of Doom. Those beady eyes we see could be just holograms projected by nutria in order to keep their children in check.

that site...

... is bugging me since I first found it.

It's slow, buggy and outdated, oh and as you mentioned even plain wrong.

I, with my business einmaleins, became a paying member of the visitor bureau, so I'd be featured on their maps and website etc.

So far they've done a very poor job in updating the site and including new businesses.

Part of the problem is, that they don't understand how to run a marketing campaign in the new "age" of digital communication and think that they can have someone design a site for $5,000 - $10,000 fixed and that is it, not understanding that the key to a good website is, to regularly keep it fresh and update it.

But, one interesting fact is, that if you search for OLYMPIA in google. The site is ranked higher than OLYBLOG (alot higher actually!). So, they understand at least, how to appeal to people outside of Thurston County aka. visitors and tourist, their main target audience! Wherein the word OLY is an insider word/nickname just by locals.

Time for change

They could use a local business to change and freshen up their site, including a link to OlyBlog! :)

I have never understood why

The LOCAL Visitors and Convention Bureau uses a design firm from out of state.

Hire local

I agree, there is so much talent here locally, makes perfect sense for local bureau to hire local.

Even a quick check of our own OlyBlog classifieds brings up two good possibilities: Say This Say That and ZXDevelopment.

Local organizations not hiring local

It's not just the visitors bureau, the Thurston Chamber, Tumwater Chamber and the Olympia City Council all hirer out many many projects when there are local companies that are very capable. The Thurston Chamber has their member directory printed by a company in Spokane rather then using one of our local very capabale printers. My company, the Helix Group has actually bid on web design projects for the City of Olympia only to have the job given to a Tacoma company.
